We are all making a STRONG comeback for 2021!
There is no question that COVID-19 impacted Water Ski and Wakeboard Alberta (WSWA), and all of our members. The impacts were different for everyone but were felt across the province. WSWA has heard from many of you, and we know clubs and schools incurred additional costs to run safe operations abiding by the Return-to-Play guidelines, tournaments had lower registration numbers due to COVID-related restrictions, some schools ceased operation altogether in 2020 because of the operational impacts of social distancing regulations, and individual athletes lost out on many aspects of a normal season. As a provincial association, WSWA was affected in similar ways. Delivery of programming was restricted, new virtual platforms and member benefit programs were trialed to engage the membership, and our annual Provincial Championships couldn’t be held. Despite the collective efforts of WSWA and all of our clubs, schools, and members, our membership base declined by 10% from 2019, when our goal is a minimum growth of 5% annually.
But one thing’s for sure, WSWA and its members are resilient! We saw many clubs, schools, and individuals rise to the challenge, and face 2020 head-on. We got on the water in a safe and responsible way and made the best of the season we could. We know we can make 2021 our best year yet, and we want to work together to do that! WSWA has received COVID Relief Funding from the Government of Alberta, and we want to award that to you, our members, who help us grow the sport. We are currently accepting applications for the WSWA COVID Relief Grant.
